What I Did in February
This Website
I started this month by writing up an update post for last month! I've been wanting to get my website more into action for a long while, so I've been glad to actually replace the "Under Construction" front page I had.
A lot of personal websites have an "about me" section, and it felt a bit strange and awkward to write that up, so I focused on yapping about some of the things I'm interested in, as I think that still paints something of a picture of who I am.
The site is still a bit haphazard and blank, but I'm really enjoying that it now serves, like, content.
Pi-Hole
I set up a pi-hole for my household! Yippee! Oh, yeah, let me explain what that is.
A pi-hole is a self-hosted DNS server that sneakily blocks ads and tracking across an entire wi-fi network! All you have to do is edit your router config to use your pi-hole as the DNS server, and anyone who connects can enjoy ads blocked across websites and even mobile apps. It can make pages load faster, too, since ads are blocked before they're even downloaded!
The biggest culprit for tracking/spyware is our smart tv - the pi-hole blocks around 60% of the DNS requests it sends. Pretty ridiculous, I think.
I enjoyed this project cause though it was quick to set up, it immediately slightly improved the lives of my family, y'know, I was problem solving for a userbase! Turns out that can be lovely!
SCiPNET
SCP is pretty awesome, there's some pretty stellar stuff on there! I wanted to make it a bit easier and less intimidating for me to casualy browse, so I put together SCiPNET!
Each cell represents an SCP article! White cells are articles you've read, red cells are articles on your "reading list" (at the moment, the top 50 articles of each year).
I think it turned out great! I like the way it looks, and I've been enjoying using it to browse SCP articles with a little less friction!
And That's It!
Bit of a more chill month this time - uni has been starting up, so I'm still getting accustomed to my new schedule. The new schedule is pretty cool I can feel more productivity oncoming with it, and I've got a couple in-progress things that'll likely make next month's post.
Chat to you at the end of March!
